BIOGRAPHY
Roel Meelkop (1963) studied visual arts and art theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During a post-graduate course at the same academy he decided to dedicate his work to sound and music. His musical activities date back to the early eighties when he started post-industrial project THU20, together with Jac van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Jos Smolders and Guido Doesborg. Their working method included many discussions about how to compose and why. This period was crucial in forming his ideas and concepts about sound and how to organise it, but it was not until the mid nineties that he was able to fully realise these ideas. The purchase of a sampler and later a computer radically changed his possibilities of working with sound, offering infinitely more control and freedom.
Since then he has worked steadily on a body of sound work, most of which was recieved enthusiastically in the small but dedicated world of sound art. His other activities include working with Kapotte Muziek and GOEM, together with Frans de Waard and Peter Duimelinks, and organising sound events, mostly in Rotterdam.
Aside from releases, Meelkop creates site-specific sound installations and performance pieces in collaboration with other artists. He also creates sound tracks and environments for video, film and theatre.
His work is often described as nuanced, dynamic and sculptural, which seems to be a reflection of his training. Meelkop has never received any formal musical education and is mainly interested in structure, dynamics and timbre, more than tonality and rhythm.

WIEMAN
Wieman is another project of Roel Meelkop & Frans de Waard; the logical runner-up to Goem, first called Zèbra, but in 2012 they changed their name to Wieman. They call their music meltpop and take conceptual approaches to create new music. They created new pieces out of the catalogue of Factory Records, worked with music that had the word ‘music’ in it, remixed music from the cassette label Limbabwe Tapes, provided music for a performance leading up to screening of ‘El Topo’ by Alejandro Jodorowsky (together with Ben Schot), worked with Wally van Middendorp (of Minny Pops), reworked Cybe (80s synth musician) for an LP, dissected classical notions in pop music and even mined their own Goem catalogue as the source of music for a new piece of music.
GOEM
GOEM (pronounced [ɣum]) is the electronic music project of Frans de Waard, Peter Duimelinks and Roel Meelkop. Active since 1996, it is one of the most internationally visible projects hailing from the Netherlands. GOEM’s work has been described as ‘an image of techno’; it’s a very minimalistic approach to electronic dance music. They have about twenty CD and vinyl releases on various labels from Europe and North America.

THU20 was founded in the mid 80’s in an attempt to break free from the traditional rock band structure of drums, bass, guitar and voice. Instead we started using prerecorded tapes, effect pedals and assorted garbage to produce our music. Initially we were a live project. Releases were simply recordings of live gigs. Later on, we discovered the studio as an instrument, creating complex works, hovering between contemporary composition and noise. Recently Jos and Jac have started remastering all our releases, they are released on our Bancamp page.
KAPOTTE MUZIEK
Kapotte Muziek was founded in 1984 by Frans de Waard and Christian Nijs. This collaboration lasted until 1987, when Christian left the project to become a guitar player in a rock band. After this Frans kept Kapotte Muziek going as a studio project and is doing so until this very day. In 1993 Peter Duimelinks joined forces with Frans for an extensive tour in the USA. In 1995 they asked Roel Meelkop to join Kapotte Muziek for live performances. Since then Kapotte Muziek exists on two levels: the studio project, run by Frans only, and the live project with the three aforementioned members. As a studio project, Kapotte Muziek is concerned with recycling used sound material into a new product. Most of us would now call this ‘remixing’. A long list of releases can show for this. As a live project, Kapotte Muziek uses everyday sounds to make collages/soundscapes, with an emphasis on listening to sound itself, rather than to any preconceived ideas. Prerecorded environmental sounds are mixed with sounds, generated by the live manipulation of found objects, mostly found in the vicinity of the location of the performance. Kapotte Muziek have toured exstensively in this formation. Since 1997 Kapotte Muziek have done several workshops, in which the participants are introduced to the musical methods of the Kapotte Musicians. Every workshop is concluded by a live performance of the participants.
